Ivanti’s support for many versions of the Cherwell CSM has now come to an end. And with End-of-Life (EOL) of the system hovering on the horizon, if you’re one of the businesses that have spent years customising Cherwell to perfectly fit your needs, this poses a conundrum—do you stay on the unsupported system or modernize to a new service management platform? Let us help you weigh up your options.
There are lots of factors to consider before undertaking any big technology project – primarily the time, costs and resources involved in switching to a new platform. But the risks of relying on an outdated unsupported legacy system can be far bigger.
First, what’s happened?
In October last year, Ivanti revealed plans to End-of-Life (EOL) the Cherwell CSM on 31 December 2026. Nine months later, in July 2024, they issued a further announcement to say that from 1 September 2024, the latest version of Cherwell they will support is version 2023.1. As a result, all versions prior to 2023.1 are now considered unsupported and will not be eligible for renewal.
For customers using earlier versions of the platform there are important implications, depending on the nature of your deployment.
If you’re a Cloud customer… You will no longer be able to renew your agreements. Unless you transition to Ivanti Neurons, your cloud environment will be deactivated 30 days after renewal date.
If you’re an On-Premise customer… You can continue using your Cherwell system, but you will no longer receive support from Ivanti for unsupported versions.
And even if you’re running 2023.1. and above, although you have support from Ivanti for now, you probably should be considering the long-term strategy for your system. When it comes to technology obsolescence, preparation is crucial. And this takes time.
The risks of EOL applications
Realistically, this is not a question of ‘if’ you migrate from Cherwell to a new ITSM platform, but ‘when’. At this stage upgrading to a supported version of the Cherwell software is not the recommended action. Upgrading in itself is a time-consuming project and with end-of-life looming in just a little over two years’ time, this would be a short-term solution.
For clarity, using an application that is beyond its end-of-life date can expose your business to the following risks:
- Security vulnerabilities. A lack of updates could lead to potential security weaknesses, leaving you at increased risk of data breaches.
- Compliance issues. If you’re unable to meet your regulatory responsibilities to maintain secure and up-to-date software, this could lead to potential penalties.
- Compatibility issues. Without bug fixes and updates Cherwell may over time become incompatible with other software or hardware you use, causing system crashes, disruptions, and reduced functionality.
- Increased costs. As well as the costs associated with the above, when Cherwell becomes EOL, it may also require specialized skills and knowledge to keep it in operation.
The good news is there are some great ITSM options out there and with the right implementation partner the whole transition process will be far less disruptive than you might think.
